her confession (or lack thereof)

So there are a few ideas that I keep revisiting in my process of writing.  This series began during my experience with National Poetry Month of writing about confessions.  I didn’t intend it to be so heavy with religion, especially since I’m not that religious of a person, but it came out that way in the end.  Apparently, I have a lot to say about the topic, in regards to others.

Anyway.  This is the fifth poem in the series and the others can be read here:

#1 a history

#2 an addendum

#3 a confession

#4 the teenage years (another confession)

And now #5:

her confession (or lack thereof)

she wanted to be a soldier of god

but taught me that even the holiest of people weren’t safe from mistakes

been playing the innocent type for as long as i’ve known her

claims she still doesn’t know what sex is

even after she lost her virginity

even after she cheated on her boyfriend

even after becoming pregnant

was probably the next virgin mary

in her mind

don’t know who she’s trying to convince more

or even god

still babbled on about the sins of others

as her belly grew

three months into it

she looked like she was about to pop

she was so big

because she was carrying all of that guilt

by herself

never meant for any of this to happen

i don’t think any of us do

soldiers don’t bear children until marriage

at least that’s what she preached

but never followed
