church hymns

I was exposed to a video that literally just made me sick awhile back.  I randomly thought of an idea while driving today and was able to write it all out, on the spot (after I was finished driving, of course), which is rare for me to do.  The article/video can be seen here.  The gist of the story is that a young boy (4-5 years old) was singing in front of a church and he sang the words “ain’t no homo gonna make it to heaven.”  As stated in previous posts, I’m not a very religious person, but I was just flabbergasted that a child, who doesn’t know any better, would be raised to hate.

In short, I wrote a poem in response to that event.  It’s probably a bit more direct and angry than my previous poems about religion, so apologies in advance.

church hymns

greensburg indiana

a young boy sings to the congregation bible verses

ones that he was taught to believe

apparently about love

kept on singin’

ain’t no homo gonna make it to heaven

almost any song sounds adorable coming from the mouth of a four year old

but i have to hand it to him

it’s catchy as hell

(pun intended)

but he doesn’t know any better

no child is born to hate anything

to be racist

or homophobic

that shit is taught to them

that’s because

when we’re young

we believe anything that we’re told

like the tooth fairy

santa claus

easter bunny

pumpkin king

and to some

the flying spaghetti monster

(and jesus)

i hate to break it to ya kids

but none of those are real

except for the boogie monster

that shit’s real and scary

so learn how to sleep with your eyes open

but the adults in the church

cheered him on

got him thinking

they like it when i do this

so i’m going to keep on doing this

not because it’s right

(which should be obvious that it’s wrong

if you have a heart)

but because that’s how children are

they like attention and praise

and seek it out daily

people are not born to hate

they are raised to do so from church songs
