don’t give me that look (day twenty)

don’t give me that look

most times

i had no clue what my dad was talking about

when he told me this

all narrow eyed

cheeks puffed out

slumped spine

i was a professional of this look

without even knowing it

i practiced

a lot

all mothers used to say that your face will stay like that

if you keep doing it

mine stayed around for five years

i couldn’t help it

even thought they told me i could

it was an instinctive second natured gut reaction

in my habits

that were impossible to break

(especially at my age)

so much so that i carried it into my mid twenties

without knowing it

but with a different purpose

late night

she was conflicted

wanted to leave

wanted to stay

until she looked into my eyes

and said

don’t look at me like that

as if i was begging her to stay

apparently

i had never lost my touch
