fall poem

fall poem

you smelled of fall colors at their prime

right before gravity took over the leaves

and right after your neighbors began baking their best kept family secrets

the ones that never left their kitchen

except for special occasions

the ones where everyone would ask

what’s your secret

the ones that were always replied with that smile

there was cinnamon

for sure

mixed with that bright orange from the oak at the park that was older than time itself

the one that had the tire swing you grew up playing with

the one you’re too big for now

but you’d like to take your children back to someday

there was a fireplace

and hot cider

you always burned yourself after coming inside

desperate for warmth

every time

you never learned

but it was always worth it

and that’s when the leaves would fall

their crunch beneath your feet was always satisfying
