fall poem

fall poem

 

you smelled of fall colors at their prime

right before gravity took over the leaves

and right after your neighbors began baking their best kept family secrets

 

the ones that never left their kitchen

except for special occasions

 

the ones where everyone would ask

what’s your secret

 

the ones that were always replied with that smile

 

there was cinnamon

for sure

mixed with that bright orange from the oak at the park that was older than time itself

 

the one that had the tire swing you grew up playing with

 

the one you’re too big for now

but you’d like to take your children back to someday

 

there was a fireplace

and hot cider

 

you always burned yourself after coming inside

desperate for warmth

every time

 

you never learned

but it was always worth it

 

and that’s when the leaves would fall

 

their crunch beneath your feet was always satisfying
