lightning counts (day twenty nine)

lightning counts

we sat together under the dinner table

waiting for the brightness to envelop the sky

during the pitch blackness that crawled its way into the evening

my father

softly counting the mississippi’s

between the flash

the silence

and the crash

never in sync

there was always a delay

even if it was directly overhead

just off tempo to the music of the rain

i was told

that the distance between the light and the sound represented the distance of the storm from us

after a certain point

i always wanted to follow it

the thunder

a perfect low rumble

but i could never run fast enough

only delay it
